2010 Leo Awards

Last night 10 of us alumni from CapilanoU attended the Leo Awards.  Both The Peace Offering and Tucker were nominated for Best Student Production. We walked the red carpet, had champagne, met some filmmakers and applauded those who won. Unfortunately our table lost. A show I worked on The Grey Matter won many awards even Best Short Drama. All in all it was a good night out.

Thank you to Capilano University Film Centre for allowing us to go to the Leos.

Internship

Last week I got a call asking me if I was interested in an internship at Bright Light Pictures. Which is kind of ironic as last summer I was up for an inter position there but the specific spot was no longer there.  Naturally I was a bit upset but Bright Light is one of "the" production companies to work for in Vancouver. So I decided to interview for the internship. I started on Thursday April 14th.

It's been going great. I'm assisting the Exec. Assistant of one of the owners of the company. I'm also answering reception calls, logging all incoming scripts, reading scripts and writing coverage, and assisting head of development.

Turns out this will also count as the practicum course at CapilanoU if I decide to go back for the degree.

Crazy 8s Screening

Last night was the screening for the 6 Crazy 8s films. One of them was Sikat and another was Cat vs. Man which I helped sound edit.

Cat vs. Man played first and got all the deserved laughs. It was directed by a friend of mine Zia Marashi. The story is about a struggling writer Rory, who gets jealous of his girlfriend's cat Waffles. Rory starts to see Waffles as a man dressed in a cat suit.

Sikat turned out really well, the score added that extra touch which made the story feel close to home.

After the screening we all went to the party, at a new club downtown called 560. It's definitely different, there are multiple floors, a co-ed bathroom with a bar and lounges, the main dance area, a VIP lounge over looking the dance floor, and a restaurant type bar. I can't wait for next year's Crazy 8s!

CIFF Awards Night

Back at the Edgewater Casino to accept our award for The Peace Offering.

Brandon and friends came out for support. The host of the evening was definetly drunk but hilarious. It wad also the quickest awards night I have been to but only being in it's third year is understandable.

Sikat Day 2

Last day of shooting, wish it wasn't over. We were at UBC for an airport scene. And ofcorse as independents go I ended up being an extra. There wasn't a whole lot for art department to do but we did go on a bit of an adventure to create a sign.

The Crazy 8 behind the scene crew came took some pics, extraed and filmed some behind the scenes ofcorse. Can't wait for the awards gala at the Vougue Theatre on March 27th.

Sikat

First day of Sikat and we even wrapped early. Sikat is the story of a mother from the Philippines who leaves her son behind and comes to Canada and becomes the nanny for Samantha and Tommy. She sends money back home for her son Jun Jun who is now 8 and eagerly awaits his arrival to Canada. Sikat is one of the six Crazy 8 films this year.

The crew surprisingly enough is mainly female. I'm helping out in the Art Department, which has been a breeze so far. *fingers crossed*

Tomorrow we shoot at UBC aka our Airport and back in New Westminster in one of the heritage homes. The house is partly owned by one of our crew members and it is gorgeous.

CIFF opening reception

Last night The Canada International Film Featival opened. My friend Janessa and I went to the Edgewater Casino had some free drinks and met some fellow filmmakers.

One thing I noticed was even though there was an age range from 20s to late 50s, everyone had the same level of expeirence. And would be willing to work on each others upcoming projects.

Wheelchair Curling - Paralympic Games

My mom, brother and myself went to the 12th Round Robin Curling Session at The Paralympic Centre aka Nate Bailey Stadium. We decided to get some food, what a bad idea that was $7 for the tiniest pizza I ever seen!

There were four teams playing; Canada vs. Italy, Great Britian vs. Japan, Germany vs. Sweden and Switzerland vs. Norway. I had no idea how they curled because how could they sweep? Alas they don't sweep at all it's all about pushing the rock with a stick and using the right strength and speed. The teams are also co-ed and instead of playing 10 ends they play 8.

The final standings were Italy 8 and Canada 7, Sweden 10 and Germany 3, Switzerland 10 and Norway 4, Great Britian 10 and Japan 3. Italy and Sweden now have to play to see who moves on to the Semi-finals. Canada is still first place and will be playing the winner.

Overall it was a great set of matches, the atmosphere in the venue was awesome! Everyone was making noise, we even had a few waves going. I just love the Canadian vibe!
